How To Disassemble, Clean, and Rebuild A Muncie 4-Speed Transmission

The name BangShift.com didn’t come by accident. When trying to figure out a name for the site, I had a giant list of possibilities, but it was not by accident that BangShift was one of them. I grew up loving stick cars, as did Brian, and there is nothing cooler than a hot rod with three pedals. If you have a Muncie in your muscle car, and have either wondered how they work or need to fix it, these two videos will help get you started. In them you’ll see how to disassemble, clean, and rebuild a Muncie 4-speed.

These two videos are part of a series called The Build where this group is putting together a 1965 Malibu SS. Watch both videos, and maybe you’ll learn a thing or two about Muncies. And if you like this, let us know because we have several Muncie transmissions in the garage and will do some in depth tech on rebuilding them if you want to see more.

In the 70’s I offered grads, from the local trade school auto mechanics class, a 1st job opportunity, to work at my shop. We liked to then train them to be more useful to us. Their final exam was to name all the parts in a Muncie 4 speed, every needle bearing and all.

Rebuild? More like reseal and repaint. They didn’t even strip it down past the midplate. I hope they inspected the gears and synchros at least. I currently have one apart. It will have a autogear iron midplate with the countershaft drilled and tapped to bolt through the midplate, forged syncro rings, heavy duty american bearings, and torquelock sliders.
