I don’t know how many of you out there have painted a helmet before, but I can tell you that I tried it once using nothing but spray cans, just to see if I could. It was on a helmet that was out of date and wouldn’t matter how screwed up it got, which is good because it kinda sucked. It had graphics, flames, and more, in several colors, and I just didn’t have the skill to mask it well enough to make all the elements come together on the helmet the way they were in my head. With that said, it was still a fun thing to try and I’m glad I did. Will I ever paint another one again: Sure, why not. I bet I could do a better job now, even if it wouldn’t be perfect. Plus, there are WAY more YouTube videos show how to paint one successfully now so I think I could make a go of it.
In this video, you’ll see just how much work goes into the masking and prep in order to get the look below. Of course, knowing how to get the shading and color correct by using the right tools and techniques is also an art in itself. You can’t just be good at masking, or just good at painting. You have to have both down to come up with something that looks this nice.
