I’ve always wanted a car with a metal flake roof, panel paint, and the whole nine yards. It’s custom 101 to have metal flake, and when you go to shows that cater to old school customs, traditional hot rods, and lowriders you will see a lot of metal flake. That’s because it’s not just for bass boats!
In the video below you’ll see a cool old classic hot rod getting the roof primed, and then black base coat going on, and then the metal flake and clear.
If you aren’t aware, metal flake like is being done here is mixed with the clear and is shot directly over the black base coat. After the desired number of coats of flake are applied, coats of plain clear are shot over it to bury the flake. This is one of the reasons why the old school customs have clear that looks to be a mile deep. And why many show car owners back in the day bragged about how many coats of clear they had on their cars.
But this one only got one coat of clear so far, because there are other graphics and such in store for the roof before it is completely done!

Thumper’s finally getting his car sprayed! After a year and a half of saying “we’ll paint it soon,” we finally made it happen.
In this one, we’re sanding, finding hidden bondo surprises, masking everything up, and laying down some serious metal flake. We went with Ed “Daddy” Roth Beatnik Purple (over black ) and loaded it up with flake to make it POP. A few runs, a little spilled flake, some coaching on the gun (“never stop, never stop!”), and boom — gleam, glisten, glitter.
We only did one solid coat of clear for now because there are more designs coming Layer by layer, we’re building it right.
