When I grew up, you had jumper cables in the trunk or under the seat of every car you owned. You hoped that you were usually using them to help someone else, and not because your battery was dead, but either way it was good to just have them so we always did. At some point, tool companies like Snap On, Mac, etc started making a box that had a battery inside it and a pair of jumper cables attached to it as well. These jump boxes were used in auto shops all over the place, and got to be pretty standard. Then lots of racers and car enthusiasts started getting them and they became something fairly standard to see in garages, pits, etc. But things changed a few years ago when the battery game changed.
That’s when all these tiny jump packs and jump boxes started showing up on the scene. You’d see these tiny boxes being used to jump big diesel engines and hard to crank machines to show just how much power they have available in the lithium batteries that are inside them. But are they better than a good old set of jumper cables? Can the little jump packs compete with the larger ones? And who makes the best ones out there?
