It has been far too long since I challenged the talented gearhead braintrust known as the BangShift readership so we’re back. Actually, as you read this I am at a secret location shooting hundreds of photos of old, weird, and obsolete parts to make this feature a recurring portion of the program here at BangShift…but I digress.
I was recently at Custom Auto Machine in Weymouth, Massachusetts getting in the way while helping to finish up the assembly of the small block Chevy stroker that will land in project Buford T Justice sometime soon. Dana Hard, the shop owner told me about a unique and cool old engine that had come in to get the magic works put on it for a car that would compete at the Race of Gentleman on the beach in New Jersey. Now the ball lands in your court. I want you to know what the engine is, who made it, what the displacement is, and what years it was made.
You will notice that the block was repaired at one point. The guys think it may have frozen and split before being welded up. I’ll give you more information on the future of this thing when I give you the answers as to what it actually is, but for now, you know your job. Examine the parts and pieces below and then take your best shot in the comments section. How good are you?!
CHECK OUT THIS BLOCK AND TELL US WHAT IT IS –
Looks like an early 30’s Plymouth??
Offinhauser 4 cylinder
Ford Model A or B 4 Cylinder
My mind changed by a friend ….it is Ford block 1928-31
Early flathead 4 cylinder, but doesn’t look like a ford
Looks like a Ford Model A. If it were the later ‘B’ engine, I think it would have a counterweighted crank and pressurized oiling.
Look allot like the Dodge Fast Four that was made in late 1927 and early 1928
I Agree, it’s definitely a 27-28 Dodge Fast Four. Besides the general appearance, one dead give away is the 5 main bearings.
Ports are on the wrong side?
oh wait. I turned my computer over. You’re right.
Looks like the motor in my dads old Lincoln pipeliner sa 200 welding machine.
Almost the same as willeys jeep motor.
Too tall for a Go-Devil.
I think this is a Ford Sidevalve, displacement 1172cc. Used from 1932 all the way to 1962 by Ford in Great Britain.
Dana Hard?
With a name like that he should be in porno movies!
Who gives a shit about that motor……..
212.3 cubic inches 1927 or 1928 Dodge
Not a ford. No hole for the verticle distrib between cyl 2-3….
