The History of the Detroit Autorama and the Ridler Award

The famous Detroit Autorama is coming soon to Cobo Hall on February 26-28, and BangShift Chad will be there to bring you the action. The Autorama is legendary today as a leading indoor car show, but many do not know that it was actually born from drag racing.

The Michigan Hot Rod Association was founded in 1951 and wanted to fund a local drag strip. In 1952 the club held the first Autorama to help pay for that, and the show was born. By 1956, the club hired showman and promoter Don Ridler, who really made the event take off. His name is now placed on the ultimate award for the best show car of Autorama, the Ridler Award.
