When GM killed when the Pontiac brand, the most lamentable loss was the G8. Sure, it was a more door, but it was packing big LS-power, could be optioned with a six-speed, and drove circles around a bunch of its foreign competitors in the category. As we all know, the cars are set to start popping back up in the hands of police, but what about the general public? Would GM consider branding the G8 differently and putting it back on the market? Bob Lutz seems to think it may happen.
One of the hardest pills to swallow with respect to the G8 was the fact that the car was a seller, had a great reputation, and performed well beyond anyone’s expectations. It was a landmark car in some respects because it really showed that GM could build a cool sedan to rival anything else in the world.
Unfortunately it hit the market just as the company and the US economy were collapsing in on themselves. Bob Lutz was a champion of the car through its many stages of development. It seems like his paternal instinct is still alive an well with respect to this car.
Lutz spoke at a J.D Power and Associates conference in Florida recently and expressed the frustration that the car is very tough to put into a product lineup. It is were a Chevy it would steal Impala sales, it can’t be a Cadillac because they already have the CTS-V, and it cannot be an Olds, Pontiac, or Saturn for obvious reasons. That leaves Buick, where it would fit in our eyes and even draw some youth sales to the typically older brand.
What do you think? Would the G8 make a good Buick Roadmaster?
