Talk about a kick ass school science project! When Joel Nystrom’s son got assigned a presentation about gears and how they work, he and his dad schemed up a BangShifty way to learn something, get full credit on the project and use bitchin’ tools. Joel let his son pick out a transmission case from his parts pile, lent the kiddo a gearset, and taught him how to use a Bridgeport vertical mill.
The whole process was documented with photos on our forum (and probably to show the teach that Joel’s kiddo actually did the work!). It sure beat the hell out of a baking soda and vinegar volcano or any other science fair reject stuff like that. His son got a valuable education in operating a neat machine, assembling something, and we’re sure he now understands how gears and gearing work a whole lot better than before he started.
