Top GM Lawyer Has Decided To Retire After Decades Of Work…Are The Recalls Taking Their Toll?

After about 37 years with the company and five years as the chief legal counsel of General Motors, Mike Millikin will retire at the beginning of 2015. The move is voluntary and the 66 year-old Millikin will stay with the company until a replacement is found. Working outside of normal protocols, GM is looking outside of the company to locate a replacement. General Motors’ spokesman Patrick Morrisey was quoted in The New York Times on the subject: “We feel we should look at all the options, and that requires an outside search.”

Milliken has recently been under the microscope during congressional hearings over his leadership of GM’s legal department, finding himself being grilled over fatal accidents linked to ignition systems that ended up with recalls. His career has also covered the $49.5 billion bailout and the initial stock offering after bankruptcy. Additionally, he has served on the boards of Opel and GM Korea, among other locations inside GM since 1977, and even led the company’s global business response team after the 9/11 attacks in 2001.
