Best of 2018: This Guy Drove Over 20,000 Miles In A TVR Chimera To Hit The Most Northern And Southern Pubs!

Sometimes you hop in the car and take off with no destination in mind…you just drive for the hell of it, stopping at places along the way and generally enjoying the trip, not caring about the destination. Other times, the destination is the whole point and everything else in-between is simply flying by at highway speeds. Then there is what 38-year-old Ben Coombs just recently pulled off…after seven months, over 20,000 miles, three continents and one clutch, he has traversed from the northernmost bar to the southernmost bar on the planet in a 1998 TVR Chimera.

How far are we really talking here? The northern bar was on the Norwegian island of Svalbard, which is situated between Norway and the North Pole, in an abandoned mining settlement with a population of four people, all of whom live in the town’s old hotel. From there he headed south into Europe, made his way to Southampton, England and shipped the TVR over to New York. He drove across the States to California, then headed south into Mexico, then Central America. He had the car ferried around the Darien Gap, then spent another 8,000 miles on the road heading to Tierra Del Fuego, Chile. There, he found the southernmost bar that he could walk in and order a drink from and thus, ended the main trip.

The TVR only needed a clutch, which was repaired in Nicaragua. The car is being shipped back to England and while we are going out on a limb, we think that he’ll continue to cruise the happy little roadster throughout the summer.

  1. chevy hatin' mad geordie

    WTF?

How did he even do 200 miles in one of the world’s most unreliable cars ever made? I expected him to be driving a Mazda Miata or an MGB…..

  2. Otto Matic

I had dinner with Ben and his pals when they passed through phoenix. Fantastic to see they made it! The tvr is a cool ride.
