On a rare off weekend between his duties as a Red Bull Racing Australia V8 Supercars driver and a McLaren factory driver in Blancpain GT Series, Shane Van Gisbergen does what any sane person does: He goes racing. Last weekend, the rapid Kiwi nabbed a seat in the Porsche Carrera Cup Australia race at Sydney Motorsports Park as part of the Rennsport Motor Racing Festival. In a leisurely Sunday drive, The Gis strolled to the front of the field from 20th place.
Motorsports TV posted this video of the opening lap, where Van Gisbergen absolutely blitzes the field from the start, picking up eight spots by Turn 2. He gives a couple places back but then reclaims those and more. By the time he’s passing for 10th place down the main straight at the end of the first lap, he’s clearly enjoying himself enough to look over and give a friendly “Later, mate” wave to the 10th place car as he’s going by.
Van Gisbergen leisurely scooted past the remaining nine cars in his half of the race before turning over to co-driver Paul Kelly, who brought the Porsche home sixth in the field.
Yeh Na, Go Giz! Sweet Az Bro.
