A Workday Dream: Hooking A HEMTT Up To The Sled At A Pull!

A Workday Dream: Hooking A HEMTT Up To The Sled At A Pull!

This should qualify as cheating in some sense of the word. The Oshkosh HEMTT series of military trucks are beasts…Detroit Diesel powered, 8×8 beasts that weigh as much as a starter home and will drive in, over, around and through just about anything in it’s path. To date, it’s the biggest vehicle I’ve ever operated under any circumstance and one of the loudest ever. You drive it like an RV, because you are ahead of the turning tires (all four of them) and find yourself swinging out and wide. Maneuverable, it is not. But if you just need to drag something from here to there, a HEMTT is a great way to go…5.43 axle ratios and the ability to drive all eight wheels means that it will come along if it’s hooked to the rig, come hell or high water. Short of trying to tow away the Taj Mahal, you’re covered.

This M978 fuel tanker is the last vehicle we’d expect to show up at a truck pull…or, for that matter, anywhere public without a bunch of other Army vehicles nearby. We’ve seen weirder things than that, though, and who knows…having 2,500 gallons of diesel fuel at the ready on a farm is actually pretty useful! The sled can take down some of the wildest creations devised by bored individuals with access to nitro-guzzling Hemis and Allison turbines, so how does a HEMTT stack up to the sled? I had to drive one of these from Connecticut to New Jersey. Not the most comfortable ride, and white knuckles as every tractor trailer zooms by you.
Great on the battlefield, crap on I-95.

Good Lord, that must’ve really sucked. I-95 from CT to NJ is a terrible ride even in Rolls Royce.
