Aussie V8 Supercars Tangle – Driver Scores Direct Hit On Competitor’s Driver Side Door – All OK

Aussie V8 Supercars Tangle – Driver Scores Direct Hit On Competitor’s Driver Side Door – All OK

Like the burnout contest guys, the Aussie V8 Supercar series is in full swing and last weekend the Phillip’s Island course played host to their brand of mechanical competition. You know and love the Aussie V8 Supercar series if you have payed attention to BangShift for any length of time. Basically, these cars are what American NASCAR vehicles should be. Production based units with hot rodded motors, the right sounds, plenty of horsepower, and bedlam a plenty during their races. In this video you’ll see one of the more coincidentally brutal crashes we’ve witnessed from this series or any other and the best part is that everyone was OK in the end.

In this tape you will see driver Jamed Courtney racing on the course, minding his own business. You will then see a red competition vehicle sliding through the grass and then skittering over a gravel trap, completely out of control, meet Alexandre Premat. As Premat heads across the infield like an un-guided missile, it is a virtual guarantee that Courtney has absolutely no idea what’s coming until he sees the back of Premat’s car airborne and zeroing in on his driver side (right ) door. A more perfectly times hit could not be reproduced by Hollywood’s finest stunt teams. We’d love to know the probabilities of this happening. Has to be less than 1 in a million chance.

Anyway, the door area of Courtney’s car takes all of the impact and there’s plenty of reason you’d expect him to be dead in there but the cage held up. About :45 into the second video there is an in-car shot of the scene as Courtney is trying to wriggle himself loose from the crumpled car. You can see sheetmetal has made it all the way to the steering column and there’s no hope of escape for Courtney through that side of the car. Premat assists (read:drags) him out of the other side of the car as safety crews are arriving. As you’d expect, Courtney was not in the best of sorts when all of this was happening but no major injuries were reported and he was able to walk, err, stumble away with assistance from safety people. One minute you are racing and the next, a couple tons of steel are flying through the air directly at you. That is a bad bad at the office.
