BangShift Question Of The Day: Who Is Your Partner In Crime In Your Misadventures?

I’ve only been writing about the stuff I do within my capabilities since 2014 in an official manner. Prior to that, you had to follow me around on the Internet, on about forty different forums, to know what I was up to, what I was working on, and what I was attempting to do. Anything prior to my arrival on the Internet might as well be classified as “when I was a kid”, because I was. My first heavy project, the 1979 Chevy Caprice coupe, started sometime around the summer of 1998, the same time a girlfriend first showed me the Internet while hanging out at her house. Since then, online at least, I’ve had a ball.

The online world works in many ways, but in one key area it does NOT. That’s in real life. Do not get me wrong…over the years I’ve virtually met and have dealt with plenty of knowledgable, friendly people and to this day there’s a whole list of folk that I consider friends that I’ve known online since forever (even though I might have met them maybe twice ever in real life.) But getting e-encouragement is one thing. Getting somebody to come over so you can bleed the damn brakes on this pile of crap you need to get running is another altogether. Having that one person who you know will show up and help so long as you return the favor when needed, or so long as y0u supply food and drink or some other kind of thank you, is a godsend. Over the years, I’ve bounced around and moved place to place, so I can’t pin down one person in particular, but there’s a lot of people who stepped in. Army friends, the Subaru folk in Washington, the car club in Arizona plus a couple of folks from the school who were curious as to what witchcraft I was up to, all at one point in time could be found in my driveway or shop watching, spinning a wrench, offering advice or helping to put the fire out. That really happened, by the way. And not just once.

Currently, I’d have to say my buddy Chris, the one who now owns the Dirty Cougar, is that guy. He’s helped me on a ton of crap, and I’ve laid in his driveway, cursing out the Cougar’s rack and pinion. Scott, the guy who went in on the Caddy limo a couple of years back, is right there as well. For Kevin, that person is Luke, who must be a good guy…why else would he show up to revive a beat-up old truck named the “Burnt Turd” after driving for miles upon miles?

Who is your partner in crime?
