I always get a bit irritated when a collection of “weird moments” in racing simply means that cars are crashing. Cars are racing…crashes aren’t weird unless one of the cars ends it’s crash standing perfectly on it’s nose or parked on top of another competitor’s car. That’s odd. A driver skidding out when the weather goes straight to hell in a handbasket? It’s pretty easy to explain why wide slick tires and rainwater don’t mix, but what do you do when the storm drops a damn tree in the middle of the track? What then? Weird moments are just that…when everybody, from the new kid helping out to the jaded announcer to the photographers who are comparing notes, can all agree that what they are seeing is novel, is strange, and might be the first time it’s ever been seen. I’ve seen a skunk screw up the timing setup at a track. I’ve seen a streaker at a demolition derby race. That’s weird. Do these clips qualify? We have to admit that the top fuel dragsters blowing up and crossing the finish line in flames, within 1/16th of a second of each other, qualifies as weird.
