Classic YouTube: A Japanese Take On Land Speed Racing

Classic YouTube: A Japanese Take On Land Speed Racing

Land speed racing is a drug. One hit is more than enough to excite. Two hits and you’re just about done. Any more and you’ll end up an addict, craving more and more speed. And either you find your end, or the end finds you. 130 MPH in the Chrysler was exciting, but the ECTA rules said that any faster required a rollcage, so I found my stopping point. For now, anyways…I’d like to try another round in something faster, but that’s down the road. Besides, there’s plenty of speed freaks out there going for a goal better than my desire to go faster than the 172-ish MPH I’ve been to date.

It’s always interesting to see how folks around the world take on motorsports. This footage comes from Option, a Japan-based magazine that has focused on speed records ever since covering illegal street racing was outlawed in the country. Bonneville, the Autobahn, the Silver State Classic, and more locations that offer up the kind of speeds they seek out will usually host some material to work with, so long as the JDM crowd would be interested. Yes, there are big crashes, like the flying FD RX-7 that turned into a wing at the salt and the Nissan Silvia S14 that balled itself up on a loop track. But others, like the Skylines and the Fairlady Zs, put the power down and keep the wheels on the ground. Check it out:

BMT…take your Chysler to “Blah”ville, the ECTA will allow almost anything now. New owners, new rules.
