Another Monday and another week of not much going on at racetracks around the country, but thanks to YouTube, there’s a wonderful catalog of excellent action from the past to check out, which is awesome whether you were alive to see it for yourself or you’re like me and this stuff pre-dates yourself by years. So if you weren’t even a thought in the back of your father’s mind when the engines were roaring and the crowds were on their feet, you’re just a click away from enjoying what was what back in the day. For me, that kick is old-school NASCAR, back when the cars were still cars, only slightly tweaked from their street-going counterparts, and today it’s the 1975 Winston 500 from Talladega.
The days of Richard Petty in his prime, Buddy Baker and Cale Yarborough, AMC, Pontiac, and Mercury work for me so well. The cars were fast, the drivers were legendary, and the track was wide-open for business. This is stock-car racing worth watching…Malibus, Chargers, Torinos, Montegos, and that oddball Matador all competing for a chance at the win on a track that was seeing 190 MPH laps all day long. We can lament the failings of NASCAR in recent years, but it also helps to see just how NASCAR got popular in the first place. If you can dig classic stock cars (and who can’t?) then this is for you, courtesy of Bud Lindemann and Car and Track. Enjoy!
