Our buddy and BS photo contributor Tommy Lee Byrd unknowingly tipped us off to his buddy’s beyond bitchin’ sleeper Maverick the other day. This thing is a pretty basic combo that is still getting tuned up but is already knocking on the door of the 10-second quarter mile zone by making runs in the deep sevens on the eigth mile. Powered by a 460ci big block Ford with a single 75mm Borg Warner turbo and blow through carb backed up by a C6 and eight inch Ford rear end, the car is wrapped in 1970s malaise brown and vinyl roof that is pure rough around the edges perfection. Other than the wooosh of the turbo, no one would no what hit ’em when this car left them sitting with their pants around their ankles at the stoplight drags. The car still has all stock suspension right down to the factory shocks according to the description!
Here’s Josh’s description of his car and this video: This is my second best pass of the day it was with 12 pounds of boost, 36 degrees of timing and pulling out one degree per psi boost while leaving at 2700 rpm on footbrake and 2 step shifting at 5200 rpm. It is on a 26×8 14 inch wheel inch Hoosier Quick Time Pro DOT slick, 3.00 gear with a mini spool, eight inch all stock rearend, freshend up C6 transmission with all stock hard parts, 2500 stall converter, stock block, crank, heads, and valves. It is a 1974 model 460, Torker two intake, Carb Shop blow thru 900cfm jetted 75/90, Cummins Dodge intercooler, S475 Borg Warner turbo 75mm 1.1 a/r, .503 lift 276/286 duration advertised, Probe forged pistons, Scat H-beam rods, ARP head bolts, ARP main studs, and all stock suspension down to the factory shocks. The engine runs on 92 octane fuel.

Now that’s the way you do it!
low 10’s with a 3.00 gear ratio? that doubles as a freeway hauler too! niiiiiice!
Take it to Drag Week 2013.
This is what it is all about for me.
Fantastic!
Wow didn’t even know my car was on here, thanks bangshift
Josh, great sleeper! Nothing better. I do have to ask, what type of mods were done to the shock towers? I trimmed the towers in my Maverick for a 351C…
He threw the shock towers in the scrap pile haha! The car has a Mustang II front suspension so the towers are gone.
My first thought was also about the shock towers.
I saw a Maverick at the Gatornationals one year that had a 427 FE in it, with stock shock towers (so he said, anyhow). That’s a tight fit with a 351 windsor.
Thanks Tommy, I figured as much. I also spotted a Maverick with a BBF in it, the exhaust routed around the front coil springs, the towers were almost completely gone.
