We saw videos of lunatic Australians racing side by side on V8 powered motorcycles on a dirt strip and immediately thought of a few jokes. We then did some research and saw that the sport was invented by a Hells Angel named Thomo causing us to immediately forgot all the jokes and frankly, it made us pee a little. Just a little. We have never heard of such madness as this. Sure we’ve seen some wild four wheelers and junk, but these custom built dirt drag bikes with small block V8 engines and huge scooper tires on them are a revelation in racing of the best kind. Clearly, one would need to have suffered some sort of serious mental trauma to even think about riding one, but we are glad the crazy bastards exist!
Rules? Well, best we can tell there really aren’t any, other than getting to the finish line first means you won. In our book, living that long would be a win. Course length appears to be a few hundred feet, which is about as long as the massive rooster tails of dirt these babies throw into the air and speeds on good runs are over 100mph according to the research we have done.
JKB Racing appears to be one of the organizations putting these events on and one of the statements on their site sums up the whole attitude of this deal pretty well:
Providing the machine is structurely sound, and fundamental safety is observed, we have little in the way of rules governing the bulding and racing of these machines. This is grass roots racing. If you have the know how to build something and the balls to race it, you’re more than welcome.
AMEN TO THAT!
