When photo contributor Charles Wickam sent me an excited text asking if I had ever seen video of a lawn tractor demolition derby, frankly I got excited. Of course I hadn’t seen video of a lawn tractor demo derby, who the hell knew they even existed?! As it turns out, the good people of Scottsville, Kentucky have a good handle on this sport and the video you’ll see proves it.
As best we can tell, the tractors have guards installed on their sides to prevent busted ankles and legs from side impact crashes, open exhaust, and that’s about it. Unlike automotive demo derbies where knocking the radiator out of your competitor’s car is paramount, it seems like killing the spindles and axles of the other guy’s tractor is the name of the game here.
There are some pretty good hits in the first couple minutes, but the key is to pay attention about five minutes into the video. A guy loses the front wheel of his tractor but manages to drive the thing like a ninja and work his way down to the final couple of running machines, with only three wheels! He eats dirt hard after a while…pay attention!
