Historical Footage: Scenes From The 1966 24 Hours Of LeMans – Fords, Ferraris, Porsches and More!

Between the 24 Hours of LeMans race that will be wrapping up as you read this, and Ford’s announcement that they will be fielding the new GT-LME race car for the 50th anniversary of Ford’s first win at Circuit de la Sarthe with the GT40 race cars, it only made sense to take a fond look back at the actual 1966 race itself. Things were simpler back then: less barriers, a Mulsanne straight that didn’t have chicanes in it, and cars that relied on driver skill and the abilities of the mechanics and technicians in the pits more than computer technology to make the entire 24 hours. Plus, it’s always good to see old iron doing what it should be doing, from the GT40 getting crossed up at the start to the mix of Ferraris, Fords and Alpines hauling the mail down Mulsanne. It’s soundless, so we don’t get the audible part, but even in black and white, this is some of the clearest footage around. You can almost hear the screaming engines…
