Porsche is certainly one of the greatest racing brands in automotive history. From their production based efforts to their competition entries in Trans Am, Le Mans, and virtually all of the other great racing circuits in the world, Porsches have been there and they normally run towards the front. Racer Peter Stolz is a dedicated vintage Porsche racer and his 1973 911 RSR clone is a pretty gnarly piece. Tipping the scales at only 2090lbs and packing 330hp out of a twin plug, three liter Porsche flat six engine is healthy enough, combined with the light weight of the car to make this a competitive piece. Sure, he is down on hp, but he is up on weight, brakes, and handling as compared to 1960s era Corvettes and Mustangs. You’ll see in this video that he loses long straight drag races but totally reels his competition when the course bends.
The car sounds great with the sixer wailing away as Stolz lays the pedal flat time after time around the famous 14-turn Road America course and as you’ll see, the car hangs with machines with far more “suds”. We dig the fact that he has a full set of Auto Meter gauges packed into the dash and that this car is always trying to get sideways on him coming out of corners and stuff. This is not a car that you just sit back and guide around the course, you’ll see Stolz get this rear engined monster sideways more than a couple times during the duration of this nearly seven minute video.
Sure, Stolz doesn’t beat ’em all, but he does his far share of passing and the driving action is great. We have to thank Craig Sutherland for the video as he did the editing of the footage. This is a great watch and a cool way to see a race like this from the “other side”. Normally we’re in the seat of the Mustang, Camaro, or Corvette. This time we’re rolling with one of those pesky Porsches that just refuses to go away!

That porsche couldn’t keep up with any of that American Iron. He got wasted in the straights.
