Choosing tools and equipment is often difficult because you just don’t know which choice is the right one for you. Some tools are more important for the professional than the hobbyist and others work for both. As tools and equipment become more specialized, like fabrication equipment and welders, the choices become even more complicated and the prices become even more varied. I’ve been welding for a very long time and have come to rely on Miller Welding Equipment in my shop. That doesn’t mean that brands like Hobart, Lincoln, and even some of the discount models available today, aren’t great machines for what you are doing in your garage. It all depends on what you are doing, and how often, when choosing welding equipment. Each of the big brands have a variety of offerings for all skill levels and all price points. But what about the other gear? Gloves, jacket, sleeves, and a welding helmet are all things that you are going to have to be very comfortable with and so purchasing them requires some important decision making.

I can tell you that I’ve used Miller helmets off and on, and regularly use a Speedglas in my home shop. I’ve had mine for more than 10 years and have never had it fail me. In fact I like it so much that when I did break a part on it I purchased a replacement online instead of buying a completely new helmet. Maybe I’ll spoil myself with something new next year, we’ll just have to see.
