Incredible Historic Drag Video: Ten Minutes of the 1959 March Meet!

This is some amazing stuff. The video we found is 10 minutes of 8mm footage shot at the 1959 March Meet. This event is one of the seminal events in drag racing history. Don Garlits was paid by the Smokers Club to show up at the race and backup the big numbers he was throwing “back east”. The race was called the US Fuel and Gas Championships and really laid some groundwork on how things would go in the future.

While Garlits had a poor showing at this event, his car breaking and well off the pace, he would run two more events out west in March of 1959 and win both. At that point the guy from “swampy ol’ Florida” began to build a legend that will last for eternity.

In this video you’ll see many significant cars. Jazzy Jim Nelson’s Fiat, Big John Mazmanian’s Corvette, a ton of twin engine diggers and a whole lot more.

This is bar-none the best video we have ever seen of this first event. This is like watching the drag racing equivalent of the American revolution…amazing stuff.
