This is one of the more death-defying top end incidents that we’ve ever seen. In one lane is the bonafide six second Rafaelito Mazda RX-8 that’s powered by a turbocharged 13B rotary engine and in the other lane is a fourth gen Camaro with a pair of mondo turbos mounted front and center in the hood. As the two cars head down track, the Camaro starts to pull away but then loses traction, shooting into the Mazda’s lane at about the 1,000ft cone. That’s when things get truly wild.
The driver of the Camaro pulls his ‘chute and it seems like the Mazda may have been tangled in it as both cars move in unison to the left lane before the RX-8 shoots violently to the right and perhaps even kissing the wall. If it doesn’t kiss the wall it comes damned close. The Camaro seems to have suffered no damage or trauma in the incident and it is rolling freely towards the end of the track by the time the Mazda gathers itself up. It is really hard to tell if the Mazda is skating around on the Camaro’s parachute or if the guy is simply trying to find a place to go that isn’t filled up with a Camaro!
At the speeds these guys are moving, it is a damned good thing that there was some distance between them when the Camaro changed lanes. If they had been side by side, this story would have had a far worse ending. We’re pretty sure the guys must have had a spirited discussion after exiting their cars in the shutdown area. Yowza!
