I often imagine that a trip into the mind of Colin Furze starts out with your own customized hard hat and a waiver that states that you will not sue the moment you catch fire. The man is a creative genius, an engineer who doesn’t have to answer to anyone but the Internetz. He creates crazy stuff simply to prove it can be done and for the pure hell of it all, enjoys them, then goes back and builds something new. And hopefully, he doesn’t burn down his garage in the process. This is a man who has built a voice-activated flamethrower and a belt of knives that spins like he’s a human helicopter, waiting to create an impromptu Halloween scene for whatever EMTs show up to stitch him back together. Unhinged? What hinge?
His latest and greatest creation is a turbo jet scooter. Need a moment to digest that? Here’s the rundown: the front steering assembly from a BMX bike coupled to a home-built frame, compressed fuel, and a turbocharger that is lit off via a leaf blower. A simple rotary knob acts like a throttle of sorts and it does move. He’s also all but straddling a propane tank up front while the intake portion of this homemade aircraft engine is too close to the hind quarters for our personal tastes. And this isn’t even the final form…he’s talking about an afterburner next.
