Massive Wreckage Video: The Two Scary Audi Wrecks from the 2011 24 Hours of LeMans

While Audi managed to win the 2011 24 Hours of LeMans, the victory came at an awfully high price. Two of their cars, both handmade, one-off, multi-million dollar pieces, were reduced to broken shards of carbon fiber in a couple of monster wrecks. Allan McNish was involved in the most scary crash of the entire race in just the first hour of the event.

While there was some speculation on the cause of the crash, no mechanical failures have been cited and McNish refuses to place blame on the Ferrari driver that got caught up in the tangle. When McNish’s car skittered over top of the pea gravel run off zone and exploded into the tire barrier, photographers and fans were in the line of fire for flying parts, but luckily, amazingly really, no one was hurt. Pay attention to the guy out running the tire!

Watch McNish’s wreck, then scroll down for the second one, involving his teammate Mike Rockenfeller.

Hours later, the Audi team would again experience another horrific crash. This time it was German Mike Rockenfeller who was trying to overtake a Ferrari (again, really?!) when he failed to make the pass cleanly and slammed into the wall at more than 200mph. There is some amazing in-car video that shows the Audi coming on the Ferrari like a house on fire, turning in too soon, and then the remote camera is showered in race car fragments. Rockenfeller, against all odds, lived through the mess.
