Yikes Video: One More Tap Should Do It – This is NOT The Right Way To Take A Hydraulic Ram Apart

There are lots of dangerous things that can happen on a job site. Equipment malfunctions, engineering failures, wanton human stupidity, you know, all the normal stuff. This video is a quick one. Less than 10-seconds long it shows how instantaneously quick things can go from mundane to really bad. Now, we cannot tell if anyone got hurt in this deal off-camera but we can certainly see that the two guys on the camera shot were seemingly ok. How? By the grace of whatever almighty you want to thank, that’s how.

These guys are taking apart a huge hydraulic ram, the likes of which one would find on an excavator or something of that nature. There’s guy one who we’ll call “holder guy” and then there is “guy 2” who we’ll call “strategically trained sledgehammer guy”. If we had to guess, what’s happening here is that they have used air to pressurize the cylinder to force the ram to the end of its travel and with a couple of well placed knocks from strategically trained sledgehammer guy, this thing will kind of pop out like a larger than average champagne cork and everyone can just go about their business.

Where the plot seems to have gone awry was when someone decided to load a literal shit ton of pressure into the cylinder so when the ram pops out it does not just come free, it launches like a missile that weighs hundreds and hundreds of pounds. It is tethered and at the very end of the clip it seems to be swinging back into the frame. This is crazy.

Anyone else use this high pressure disassembly method out there?
