If you aren’t familiar with Cerakote, you probably aren’t alone. Cerakote is a Polymer-Ceramic coating that can be applied to a variety of surfaces and materials including metals, plastics, woods, and more. Its most popular use is probably on fire arms, where it’s durability and good looks are incredibly popular. It is also used as a high temp exhaust coating, but can be applied to most anything and it can totally be done at home. Spray it on, let it sit, and then bake it. That’s the process. Well it is a little more involved than that, but not much. Clean parts and precisely mixed components are the key to a successful job, but there isn’t any rocket science with regards to the application of Cerakote. They leave the rocket science for what’s inside it.
These coatings are ultra durable, corrosion and chemical resistant, heat resistant and amazing looking. And while this particular video shows the product being baked, Cerakote does offer coatings that don’t require baking as well. In fact those coatings provide an even higher temperature heat resistance.
On thing to note: While this video shows Cerakote in Bronze, which seems to be its most popular automotive color choice lately, it is available in a huge variety of colors. Looks like a huge pain in the neck.
Looks cool, but I will probably still go to the local powder coater.
$35 for 4 ounces? That’s pretty steep!
Looks like a lot of work. Expensive and time consuming, but does allow you to trick out your bike at home on your schedule. Nice job and the parts turned out great. Good luck with future projects.
