Here’s the younger half of another father/son tandem on the NHRA tour, Shane Gray. Shane’s dad Johnny was most recently a Pro Stock driver who has made the leap back into the nitro Funny Car ranks, where his heart really lies. Shane is pretty candid with his response when asked if he planned on climbing into a nitro flopper some day. We’ll suffice it to say that his heart is pumping gasoline, not nitromethane.
Gray qualified 15th a Pomona this year and was felled in the first round by eventual event runner up Greg Anderson. Known as a very strong starting line driver, Gray worked hard in the off season to keep his skills sharp. The car duties are being handed by two time Pro Stock Champion Jim Yates, and Gray says that they make for an excellent one-two punch. They’ll be looking to build on their Pomona performance in a couple weeks down in Gainesville!
