The math has been the same since the beginning of the automotive industry in the early 1900s. Take a big motor, jam it into a little car and get the hell out of the way. English hot rodder Perry Stephenson followed this mantra when he stuffed his MG GT full of Rover V8 engine and topped it with what looks to be a 4-71 blower and a single four barrel carb. For the right amount of noise he added zoomie style headers that exit up through the hood. The car seems to have had several combos in it over the year but for all the reasons mentioned above this blown setup is the coolest and the little car runs hard as well. In this video you’ll be riding on the leading edge of the roof for a 9.6-second run down the famed quarter mile at Santa Pod in England.
If you are wondering what the hell a “Rover V8” is, don’t be so confused. Rover bought the tooling for the 215ci engine from Buick back in the 1960s and their V8s were a variant of that engine for decades. We’re not sure if this is a 3.5L V8 or if it is one of the other displacements that Rover offered over the years. The engines were never “big” so to speak but there were displacements that went all the way into the mid four liter range by the time the “real” Rover V8 went out of production in 2005.
The engine is still a popular one in England for hot rodding purposes because they were produced in great volume and we understand that there are still plentiful in wrecking yards. As is shown in this video, with some boost and in the right car they’ll jam right down into the single digits on the strip. They have a unique exhaust sound as well, especially through the hood puncturing zoomies! To us, Perry Stephenson’s car is the definition of a British hot rod. From the body to the motor, it is a rolling, screaming tribute to the Union Jack!
Thanks to Andy Dibley for the tip!

have a SBC in mine, is a lot of fun, currently rebuilding after hit and run, will be back this summer–see page 8–readers rides
I’m still looking to get a blower on my 357 cid SBC Gen 1 Chevy S10 Pro Street Truck – Can’t wait, its going to be fun! xD
Perry runs the 4.6 version and sprays 150 as well as the blower, runs well, nice and consistent. We run 3.9 version with a 4-71 on bug catcher injection in a RED, got in the 8’s last year, more to come this time round. Love the little Rover V8.
