Bryan Thompson is an automotive designer and Hemmings contributor who recently spent some time in South Africa. While tooling around shortly before having to catch a flight, he stumbled upon what was cheerfully called the Wijnland Automotive Museum in Joostenberg Vlakte, which is a little ways east of Cape Town. It’s not so much a museum as it is more akin to one of the barn find auctions that have come up lately. What is cool, besides some of the finds themselves (when did a 1971 GTO make it to South Africa?) is that all of the cars have been converted to right-hand-drive. There’s a lot of rust in this video, but there’s been cases where worse cars have been saved, and it would really mess with someone’s head at a car show if you rolled up in a right-hand drive 1957 Plymouth wagon. While it’s always kind of sad to see these cars sitting and rotting, it’s cool to know that at some point in time American cars were seen tooling around the country.
