The Half-Dead Hornet Road Trip, Part 2: Vacuum-Operated Windshield Wipers?!

The Half-Dead Hornet Road Trip, Part 2: Vacuum-Operated Windshield Wipers?!

The worst “running car, driving home” story I’ve got involved the purchase of my Dodge Mirada back in 2009. For $650, the 318 ran well enough, and the electrical system was passable…I even had dash lights that worked on that trip! But I had three things going badly for me that night. One, the front suspension was somewhere between “bad” and “praying my ass off”. Which wouldn’t be so bad if item #2 didn’t involve one of the most hellish rainstorms I’d ever bear witness to hitting right as I was preparing to make the 70-mile trip home in the middle of the night. Item 3 involved an emergency windshield wiper replacement in the parking lot of a Sam’s Club in ankle-deep water while my assistant watched from the comfortable confines of MY Monte Carlo.

Could be worse. Jacob Davis recently scored two AMC Hornets from a Colorado junkyard and decided to road-trip them back to Georgia. Yeah…let’s think about that for a second. The Hornet Sportabout X is a dead player at the moment, so it’s being flat-towed behind his dad’s Toyota Tundra. The coupe, on the other hand, runs and is streetable enough. But let’s think about the whole “from a junkyard” part for a minute. Think he had some fun on the trip? Part two of the story continues on here…
