The Parting Shift: A 1950 GMC with Two Transmissions and Two Screaming Strokes of Detroit Diesel Power!

The Parting Shift: A 1950 GMC with Two Transmissions and Two Screaming Strokes of Detroit Diesel Power!

Oh man, is this cool! We stumbled upon this video of a kick ass 1950 GMC truck zipping down the road and making sweet, sweet diesel noise from the turbocharged four cylinder Detroit engine and immediately ear marked it for Parting Shift duty. The truck, which we have seen in other videos is ratty and cool in all the right ways.

The two sticks you can see via the great camera placement are attached to a Clark five speed transmission and a three speed auxiliary transmission. We’ve been lightly hunting for this very setup to bolt into Brutus the wrecker because we think it is totally awesome. The tall handle appears to be a modified piece as we have never seen another one like it.

The truck seems to really scoot on down the road and it sounds wicked with the little 212ci, two stroke Detroit shoving it along!

PRESS PLAY TO TAKE A RIDE IN THE TRUCK AND THEN WATCH THE SECOND VIDEO TO SEE IT BURNING TIRES!

Here’s the same truck doing a burnout!

I guess it’s just me, but I hate the term ‘ratty’ or ‘rat rod’ applied to all sorts of vehicles. I’ve seen everything from early ’20’s pieces to a ’70 nova 4-door labeled as such. A bad black primer paint job & red painted wheels & stick-on skulls are not characteristics of a real hot rod. This truck may be a little rough around the edges, but to me they should call it ‘un-touched’ or ‘in-progress’. Rat rods to me are those little-uncomfortable-cartoon-fairground cars built from tractors parts and booger welds. Granted there are some decent rat rods, but the rest of them out there give ’em all a bad name….yeah Brian it’s a very Cool truck, with the double trans and other work done to make it unique.

I’m no expert, but a 2 stroke Detroit Diesel just sounds badass to me. That double stick shifting action tops it off. Just makes you feel like he’s going a lot faster than the landscape going past the windshield.

You mean like an 8V-92? I had a job when I was young driving a half cab Crane Carrier mixer. It had a 6-71 with the stack cut off at the top of the cab. I’d go to sleep at night hearing that little 238 in my head.
