I don’t have a lot of experience with so called “side by sides” or UTV vehicles that originally were built for guys to use on farms and have now become a crazy part of the power sports world. From their humble days as working vehicles, these little truck-like machines can now be modified just the same as a full sized rig. From suspension lifts and engine upgrades like turbos and blowers, to wheels, tires, exhaust, and everything else the UTV created a whole new wing of the high performance industry. Well, for Paul Stender, who has built more than 40 other turbine powered vehicles (including a 300mph stock bodied school bus) he needed more than what was currently available out of the catalogs. His idea of hopping up a RZR was to bolt a GE T85 turbine into the thing. That engine makes the equivalent of 1,400hp. It is important to note that this is a thrust driven creation. The axles are not transmitting the power to the ground.

In the video you’ll see a series of still photos showing the build of the machine, the installation and plumbing of the turbine, and ultimately video of it being test run and driven. The video closes with the thing appearing at a circle track as some sort of exhibition act. You can see it shooting fire and smoke as it rolls around the oval. We have no idea what the theoretical top speed of the machine is or at what point it would become a poorly handling airplane. We suspect that would happen at a relatively low speed as opposed to say a 1970 Cadillac. The lightness of the RZR would seemingly make it more susceptible to lift off!

The fact that someone looked at a turbine and then they looked at a RZR and said, “YUP….PERFECT!” solidifies out faith in humanity and the fact that there are going to be crazy dudes out there building weirdo stuff no matter what in the future. Part of us really wants to drive this thing. The other part of us wants to hit the first part in the back of the head with a frying pan for thinking that is a good idea.
