This Teaser Footage For The Upcoming Film, The Last Great Road Race – About La Carrera Panamericana Is Excellent!

This Teaser Footage For The Upcoming Film, The Last Great Road Race – About La Carrera Panamericana Is Excellent!

While events like Drag Week, One Lap of America, and other feats of speed and endurance are hardcore, we don’t think that they hold a candle to the still going wildness that happens during the course of La Carrera Panamericana in Mexico. The race began in 1950 as a way for the country to showcase its new coast to coast highway system. Big cars like Lincolns and Cadillacs were joined by the hottest sports cars of their day and all of them thundered across the country with the hopes of getting to the other end of the nearly 2,000-mile highway first so they could bask in the glory and the prizes that came with winning.

Lots of things have changed since the race began in 1950 both with the roads themselves, the geopolitical scene in Mexico, and the general attitude about having a balls-out race held on public roads, but La Carrera Panamericana has survived. The event is now a vintage style race, but it is a race nonetheless. This video appears to follow a team racing an old Porsche but you’ll see Mustangs and other American classics dressed for battle and hauling ass at various points in the video.

This is essentially a teaser or trailer for the upcoming film called, “The Last Great Road Race” which will be a more in-depth documentation of what you will see in the video below. Frankly, we can’t wait to see it because there’s high speed racing, thrashing to fix the car, scenes with the classic Porsche clearly in distress off the road, and a driver/team that looks zombie tired with days left to go. This is a 2,000 mile contest run over the course of a week over public Mexican highways with the sanction of the Mexican government. There is a lot of rural travel, but there is also a lot of weaving around people on actual public highways.

We’d love to just attend this thing, let alone race in it. It still has that old school race feeling where competitors were pretty much OK with either winning or dying on the way to secure victory. There’s is a wildness and an untamed nature to the race that virtually all other homogenized modern races seem to have lost. Maybe it is the public roads, the foreign country, the high risk factor, we don’t know for sure. We do know that in about two minutes of video, this production company has us all hot and bothered to see the full length version of “The Last Great Road Race”. We bet  you’ll be jonesing to see it as well!

This is a race that is dominated by the Studebakers. They take first through sixth place practically every year. There are three guys from our area that race there every year and bring their cars to our local gathering “The Pismo Donut Derelicts”. Cool stuff.
