Thrifty Luxury: The Home-Built 1959 Ferrari 250 Testa Rossa On The Streets!

Make no mistake about it, there is no such thing as a “cheap Ferrari” that is worth owning. None. Not even a beat-up Mondial is going to be easy on your pocketbook, so suffice it to say that a late 1950s Ferrari 250 Testa Rossa will absolutely and utterly decimate your wealth. We’re talking $30-$40 million dollars per copy. We’re talking middle finger money. To spend that kind of money on a car…well, your imagination can tell you how much money you need to be making in order to pull the trigger on that kind of decision, right?

But what about making your own? There isn’t anything stopping you from actually getting down and dirty and putting one together yourself. This car is such an example…using a body that had been wall art and nothing more for decades, and using only Ferrari parts, what you are looking at is a bare-metal tribute build that the owner has painstakingly gone to great lengths to make as close to the real thing as possible. That includes the Ferrari V-12…not the exact specification for a 250 TR, but close enough to not worry about that minor detail. That includes the Weber carburetors, the throttle linkages, the twin distributors with two sets of points each, and the noise that leaves audiophiles and gearheads weak in the knees. He’s got the proper Borrani wire wheels on. He’s got the proper gauges in the dash. And he’s got Jay Leno driving it on public roads in California, because he isn’t afraid to actually use the car…even after it got wadded up in a traffic accident recently. We may not be much for upper-crust cars, but this guy is doing it right in a way that makes us want to shake his hand.
