Slight Miscalculation: The Tough Truck Mustang Gets Friendly With The Wall At Buck Motorsports

Between 1979 and 1993, millions of Ford Mustangs rolled off of the assembly line. Millions. Their popularity hasn’t waned any, either…they are light, easy to modify, have an outstanding amount of aftermarket support, and if you know what you are doing, are nothing short of an outright ball to drive like a total maniac. Want to drag race? Find an LX notchback coupe for the lightest weight and get to work. Want to autocross or road race? Pick your poison. You can even realistically try to use one of the turbo-four models as an MPG commuter if you are so inclined.

But the last time we showed you footage of the Tough Truck Mustang being raced, there was some backlash. Here’s where we sit: chances are good that this was a shell car that had been gutted for another project, or was sitting in the grass waiting for it’s day at the crusher when it was given a howler of a powerplant and cut loose at Tough Truck races. If you ever watched Dukes of Hazzard and wanted to drive like Bo and Luke, only a rally race could offer a closer reality than this. Dirt tracks, jumps, and plenty of airtime are calling cards for the sport that usually sees Jeeps and old trucks driven to destruction. With a relatively short wheelbase and plenty of grunt, the Mustang is nimble and maybe a bit too playful when it hits the whoops section. What’s the damage? A headlight is all we can see.
