This could be the coolest autocross final of all time. Two of the country’s best autocross drivers, both in Corvettes that are family heirlooms, one the newest champion of the Optima Ultimate Street Car Invitational and the other was a past champion and current podium finisher. 17 years ago, both men, and both Corvettes, squared off against one another in an autocross competition eerily similar to this one as they both battled it out for the SCCA Solo 2 National Championship.
You literally cannot script this stuff.
In our opinion on sheer backstory alone nothing will ever top this shootout between two legends. One of the most impressive things about the Goodguys autocross championship is the fact that there were multiple SCCA national autocross champions competing for the honor of Autocrosser of the Year accolades, prize money, and other cool stuff for winning the event. The shoot out is cool because it is just that. You are paired with another driver and the low time in the pair moves onto the next round and next opponent.
The winner of the battle was Danny Popp in the 1972 Corvette his dad bought new back in the day. Now powered by a Lingenfelter engine and wearing Vansteel suspension and JRi shocks, it is an amazingly capable car with a rev limiter that waits until 8,500 RPM to step in and stop the party. He wheels the car expertly in this video over a long (60+ second) course at the Goodguys event in Scottsdale, Arizona. His competition is Brian Hobaugh who also races a Corvette that has been part of his family for decades. Hobaugh drove his ’65 to a win at the Optima Ultimate Street Car Invitational just a week ago. The two guys felled some serious competition through the rounds of the shootout before meeting up with each other. Just cool stuff. Oh…and that matchup from 17 years ago? Popp was the champ back then too, which means we’ll have plenty more chances to watch them battle it out at Hobaugh most certainly tries to even the score.
Congrats to Danny Popp on the win and accolades awarded from the achievement. You earned it! Thanks to the guys at RideTech for shooting the video and posting it to their YouTube page! Check ’em out!
