Australian drag racer Steve Easton learns the meaning of the term “dead hook” in this quick video from Willowbank Raceway. His awesome blown 1932 Ford coupe applies every ounce of power to the track and it holds like velcro. With no spinning tire, the car begins to climb up the ring gear and less than two seconds later, Easton is doing his astrological charts before he pulls his foot out of it and the car smashed to the ground. It looks like the front end it toast as the coupe rolls slowly down the track. Easton does maintain some semblance of steering as he’s able to get the car back into the correct lane anyway.
Cars without wheelie bars are totally cool in our book, but cases like this certainly make them seem like they should be mandatory equipment on anything we’ll ever own with serious snot. Lots of grandstand heroes will quickly say, “he should have let out of it sooner, etc,” but we’d challenge them to have the stones to even try and launch a car like this one once. Stuff happens at a very fast clip and in the time it took him to realize that coupe was not coming down any time soon, it nearly went over backwards. That’s not a knock on the driver, it is the reality of the situation. It seems five times quicker in the seat than on film!
