Watch a Russian Rally Team Survive One of the Worst Rally Wrecks Ever at WRC Mexico

There are wreck and then THERE ARE WRECKS. This one falls in the second category and displays just how toughly little rally cars are built. Russian rally driver Evgeny Novikov and his co-driver caught air and rolled their car damn near 10 times at high speeds during a stage of the rally last week. The two men survived and apparently didn’t suffer any serious injuries which is an astounding fact once you see how violent and long lasting this wreck is.

Pay close attention to a few things. The first is at 0:08. The roof vent of the car is suddenly gone, leaving a gaping hole in the roof. We think that a spectator probably lobbed a rock at the car and caved it in. Watch the video back slowly a second time and we think you can see the rock actually coming into the car. Insane. The second thing to watch is the co-driver during the wreck. He does the exact wrong thing in putting his hands over this head and grabbing onto the roll cage. The driver is right on as he tucks in and keep his hands, feet, and digits out of harms way. One wrong landing and the co-driver would be missing a hand or worse!

This is as violent and crazy as it gets.

Looks as if something also hit the roof vent at the 5 second mark, and the announcer says they’re off the road at that point – maybe a tree limb tore the vent off.

Ya, he drove through a fence. You can see it through the passenger window as he’s trying to get back on the road prior to the wreck.

I bet some engineer will try to create a fence-proof vent.
