Rally guys are totally nuts, we have long admitted that. When their courses aren’t lined with big trees or narrow walls to smash into, there are ditches, streams, and other obstacles designed by mother nature to screw with your program. As the driver and co-driver of this volvo discovered at the Castrol Rally in Finland. While hauling down a road the car comes over a rise and it appears that the driver isn’t far enough to the left and it puts the right rear tire off.
Normally on a flat road that isn’t much of a big deal. You correct the drive away. In this case, putting the wheel off was a major error because it appears that there was a significant drop off right next to the road. Once the rear tire goes off of it, the whole car gets sucked in and then before anyone has a chance to do anything other than throw their arms over their head, the Volvo is flying and rolling…a lot!
We have not watched it in slow motion enough times to get an accurate count, but there were a bunch of snap rolls in there. The roll cage held up perfectly and the driver’s are was no compromised at all, best we could tell. Plus, the car is a Volvo, even without the cage, the people inside probably would have been fine. Kidding of course. The cage kept them from being totally squashed flat by the roof caving in when it struck the ground.
Rally racing sure looks like a lot of fun, but it is high stakes. You need to be really good behind the wheel because a small error like the one this driver made can result in a wreck for the books….just ask the guy, he’ll tell you!

Really?!?!?! After all that build up I was expecting something spectacular. That wasn’t much for a rally car wreck.
