Watch These Videos Of Red Bull Frozen Rush V8 Trucks Flying Through The Maine Snow!

I should have added “and revel in our total failure,” to the title of this blog item because that is what I feel as I watch them. Let me explain.

Recently at the Sunday River ski resort in Maine, Red Bull put on the second running of their “Frozen Rush” event. What is it? Only 900hp, four wheel drive, full tilt off road trucks running around a course cut into the snowy hillside of the resort. What’s BangShift’s failure? Pretty much lacking the knowledge of such an epic event happening just about four hours north of our eastern world HQ. I learned of the race about a day before it happened and by then there was no time to get there and cover it. As you’d expect, the whole thing was absolutely freaking awesome and I missed it. These videos are like salt in a festering open wound that I may never recover from. Watching the two videos below made me weep because of the fact that they’re totally awesome and because it forces me to recognize the incredible missed opportunity I let slide by due to ignorance. Ricky Johnson won the deal, which seems to have been run in time trial fashion with one truck on the course at a time, although you’ll see a cut in the film of one truck flying over another. Simply put, the trucks were launched rally style with the quickest time around the course being the best. It was not a head to head race and while we’d normally say that only having one truck out at a time weakened competition these videos renders that opinion wrong.

From the sounds of the engines revving to 9,000+ RPM to the sideways, tail out corners, to the huge jumps, and to the fact that the entire course was literally carved out of the vast snow accumulation on the mountain, this is northern winter motorsports perfection. Making matters even worse, Red Bull seems to move the event around each year so the chances of the race coming back to New England in 2015 looks to be virtually nil.

The first video is all wild “outside” video, giving a spectator’s eye view of the action. The second video was taken inside Johnson’s race truck and it may be even better than the first one because you can see how sideways the killer four wheel drive unit was for the entire race, how hard Johnson was racing over the jumps and through the slalom sections, and how epic it looks to spin snow donuts from inside the truck. The literal wall of white kicked up by the truck as it spins around it something we can’t even begin to describe.

I failed myself and BangShift by missing this deal. If it does come back to Maine next year, I will be there. Promise.

That’s like someone was watching Olympic skiing, and decided it would be a million times crazier if they used pickup trucks.
