Alaska Raceway Park in Palmer, Alaska is a nice IHRA sanctioned, quarter mile strip that services the needs of American drag racers up in the great white north. The place is surrounded by majestic mountains and scenery that you’ll literally get at no other strip in the world. Did we mention that the place has a heated starting line area to help manage track temp as well? The place runs a busy schedule from May until the end of the summer and lest you think it is just guys racing street cars, here’s video proof that there’s nitro in them thar’ hills!
This is footage from a match race at Alaska Raceway Park that was held back in July of 2012. Two legit nitro burning fuel altereds, the Alaskan Grizzly and its sister car a AA/FA called Spare Parts were match racing at the track and giving the fans a snoot full of the best smell on Earth! They both complete their burnouts and things are fine until just after the launch. Driver Marty Bodenstadt who is in (we think) the Spare Parts machine gets a late jump on the tree and then has to immediately fight the car, which does not end well. Despite a valiant effort, the car ends up on its side, rolling and stopping in a semi-turtle position on the track. Marty was unharmed, but as you’ll see in the video the car was harmed pretty badly.
Hopefully the boys can get it fixed up over the winter and back to spewing nitro and smoke this spring. Fuel altereds are not to be trifled with. This video with its in-car angle shows just how quickly it can all go wrong. The cars, with their dual mags must be equipped with big time fuel systems too and probably made some really good power in relative terms with other nitro burning engines.

Out of the groove and on the throttle………….
Thing’s hurt bad.
Looks like a good two car team, down to one. Glad the driver’s sitting up. One way to dispose of “spare parts”…
I think he had the better tune up.
That must have hurt bad for the driver. am glad he is okay though. as for the car a wreck.
It was Marty Bodenstadt driving the Spare Parts (the black AA/FA), his brother Jamie Drives the Alaskan Grizzly AA/FA. The Alaskan Grizzly has run as quick, and fast as a 5.44 @ 290 mph. They run the big pump, high gear only with a clutch management system similar to NHRA’s “big show” F/C’s.
Here’s the Grizzly running 5.46 @ 267 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RHi50CDOAtQ&list=PL62C7FD6B3EDB0D10&index=34
