Wreckage Video: The Hardest Wreck in the History of Autocrossing

Wreckage Video: The Hardest Wreck in the History of Autocrossing

This video proves two things. The first is that the Nissan VQ engine that powers virtually everything in their product line up, in one form or another, is the most awful sounding engine in the world. The second thing is that no matter what form of racing event you are running in, violent wreckage is a very real possibility.

This Nissan 350Z, wearing a garish paint job and dink-tastic wing eats a concrete wall and a tree (in that order) while hauling the mail at the start of an autocross run. We have absolutely no idea how this driver managed to wreck in this fashion. The camera vantage point is not the best, but it seems the guy was driving in a straight line and simply drove right into the wall (and tree)!

You decide…what the hell happened?

The start and lay out of that course was begging for something like that to happen. Never design an autocross course that allows that allows that much speed initially. Those guys need to pick up Roger Johnson’s book on autocross course design

The extreme downforce of the completely necessary wing made the front tires lose thier contact patch with the track not allowing the driver to steer and straight into the wall he went.

I bet mall security unholstered their flashlights him!

That’s not an autox, it’s a drift event which is why the course had a good runup to build some speed at the beginning. Still not a great course design.

Idunno. My buddy somersaulted his CRX at an autocross back in the mid 90’s, ending upside down. I think that might have been worse than this.
