Wrong Circuit, Right Reasons: Tom Bailey Goes For Laps At The Freedom Factory

Wrong vehicle, wrong situation. Funny how that makes for some awesome stories, isn’t it? There’s a nice mud pit out and about, and there were plenty of off-road rigs tearing it up, but the one guy who came barreling through in a ’73 Oldsmobile land yacht and somehow, by divine intervention, and managed to make it through? Dude’s going to be drinking free tonight as everybody is going to want to talk with him. Big burnout pit, open season on killing tires? Sure, bring your bullnosed Bronco, lock the hubs and show the Subaru brats how a four-wheel tire fire is supposed to look. The drag strip, home of the most brutal accelerations this side of an aircraft carrier’s launch system. Wait, who the hell brought a Ford Fiesta onto the track…and somebody explain to me how that thing just ran a nine-second lap.

See? The off-beat path is the one that’s most memorable. Which is part of the reason why seeing Tom Bailey’s “Sick Seconds” Camaro lapping a circle track is so fantastic. Bailey’s car is a street-legal missile, a Drag Week legend, everything you wish your silver CUV wishes it could be and then some, and here it is roaming a circle track, and not in a gentle manner, either. It might seem sedate, but when you are running skinny fronts and you’ve got enough power to keep the lights on at any small town in the States at the touch of your right foot, we can understand the calm and rational approach.
