Doing It Wrong Video: How To Not Aqua Skip A Dirt Bike And Nearly Kill Yourself In The Process

Doing It Wrong Video: How To Not Aqua Skip A Dirt Bike And Nearly Kill Yourself In The Process

The two legs jutting out from the massive splash down belong to a dirt bike rider who was attempting to aqua skip his dirt bike across this water obstacle at the Clovis MX park in New Mexico, right over the Texas border. As you can see, his attempt was a failure because of several different reasons and we’ll get to those in a minute but what struck us as a funny video at first kind of horrified us at the second watching because this guy could have really messed himself up doing this. He loses his helmet and does not appear to have any neck protection on so if his landing was any different than what actually played out, he could have been messed up for life or his neck could have been snapped like a dry twig. Neither of those things are good to consider.

While we have not nearly enough applicable riding experience to critique this guy’s skills, we can survey the basics of the situation to see what went wrong. Long story short, everything. Any time we have seen the “skitter over water” trick done with a dirt bike, a truck, or a snowmobile it has always been done on a gradual approach into the water. In this case, the guy has to literally “jump” into the the water area he is trying to cross and we’re as surprised as anyone that the surface tension of the water didn’t support the weight of a bike and rider jumping onto it. Also, the rider flips so violently because he landed in the soft, mucky bottom of that mud hole with the front tire first. That literally stopped the bike and sent him on the gymnastics routine his buddies caught on tape.

The rider is VERY lucky to have all of his faculties after this one. You’ll see his helmet get flung off and all the rest of it in the video below. We’re not saying we could have done any better a job at this than he did but wow is this a hilarious but nasty wreck.

Thanks to James Pringle for the tip on this soggy mess!

He wasn’t trying to water skip it. Just splash in the make it through….
Also, he didn’t almost drown. His chin strap was on and tight, it ripped the helmet right off.

So be a little more polite with your words… But then again, I named my video that to get the attention… and it sure did!

just to hit on what Britt said….. you need to watch your words bro…… he wasnt trying to aqua skip, it was just a shallow water hole….. and to say almost kill yourself is way over worded, i have taken harder falls than that and got up and walked away, and far as safety goes we all wear full gear and the guy taking a bath does wear a neck brace, it just so happens we did not expect that to happen at all, if we did he would of had his brace on for sure…….. thanks for the article and getting it out there…. we sure didnt expect it to go that far from some guys out messin around on a sunny afternoon……

OK to clear things up, I am the rider in this video. No I was not trying to water skip my bike, I know how to because I have done it a hundred times on rivers and water crossings. Yes my helmet was on as tight as it goes, it got ripped off as well as the gopro when I came up out of the water for the second flip (hard to tell because of water flying everywhere). This jump was a new add on for an enduro track and is purposed as a lagoon jump, what happened was there was a big rain, water sat there for some time and where I landed was the original uphill of the landing and was supposed to be very shallow, well when water sits in dirt it re-shapes it. It bowled out the landing making it very deep and when my back tire landed first it dropped the front which caused both tires to stick in the deep mud and stop my bike instantly causing me to flip. No I do not own a neck brace because they are expensive, but yes I plan on buying one soon

And yes I do usually have a neckbrace, but those do break and that’s why I am buying a new brace in the next week or so

In 3 decades of hard core woods riding and motocross, I’ve only ever seen poorly fitting or improperly fastened helmets come off of riders. And in all the motorsports I’ve been involved in in my lifetime, I’ve never seen one slip the D rings. The way you guys talk you’d think he questioned your manliness, sanity, and maximum grade you made it to in school.

Ok, as the rider in the video. If you watch the uncut gopro video it is on before i put my helmet on with the camera rolling you can clearly see me fasten my helmet properly as I always do before riding to ensure my own safety. Now since you haven’t seen that clip I can see why you would assume it’s not. But I and everybody out there that day can assure that is was on tight. It flew off due to the up force of my head coming out of the water during my second flip, because the helmet is strapped by a button and going through the d-rings, it can only withstand so much force before it slips. And for your satisfaction I am a high school graduate who recently got accepted to a renowned college for a degree in global business marketing 🙂

“I don’t have a neck brace because they are expensive, but I plan to buy one soon.”
Funny, you had enough for the bike and the Go Pro

“Yes, I do usually have a neck brace, but they break, and that is why I am buying a brace in the next week or so”

Change of story; so which is it?

“The guy taking a bath usually wears a neck brace, but we didn’t expect that to happen at all”

That is the definition of the word “accident”, no one plans it.

    Darwin’s Theory proven once again.

Being a parent, I am sure your parents would be just thrilled to push you around in a wheelchair for the rest of your life because “neck braces are expensive”

To steve-o, not a change. I don’t have one at the moment due to it breaking, but I plan on purchasing a new one soon. A leeat to be exact. Yes it was an accident, and as someone who is independent and 18 yes it is expensive to just pop off and buy something like a brace. Like mark said, we were just messing around on a sunny day after rain. But hey I still wore all the protection I had at my current disposal. Not everyone’s parents buy there stuff for them.
