Warren Johnson Rants About NHRA on ESPN Race Telecast

Warren Johnson has been lots of things throughout his career but quiet has never been one of them. The long time Pro Stock competitor and multi-time champion unleashed a pointed verbal attack on the NHRA during the ESPN2 broadcast of the race. Johnson accused the NHRA of catering to the Fuel cars, “scalping the fans,” and essentially steering the sport towards ruin by not slowing down the nitro cars.

Johnson’s love for the nitro-powered machinery has never been hidden. He once famously called the cars, “oil derricks with wheels” and has complained in the past that the track preparation methods used by the NHRA favor those cars at the expense of others like Pro Stock.

This is probably his most agressive verbal attack, and the fact it was made on national television as opposed to a print or web-based source means that the guy is fed up to his eyeballs.

CompetitionPlus.com did a nice job with a story and a video of the interview Johnson gave that has raised this issue to the forefront.

Do you agree with Johnson? Are the Fuel cars really the bane or professional drag racing?
