If you’ve ever watched an MLB or NBA All-Star Game, you know that professional athletes are incredibly capable of having a world of fun while still doing things that neither you nor I have even the slightest capability of replicating. It’s no different with racing drivers and while the Race of Champions is fun, it’s not nearly as fun as this. When McLaren F1 drivers past and present gathered in Spain at the karting track owned by McLaren driver and former world champion Fernando Alonso to go wheel-to-wheel, it’s a loosely controlled melee both in the briefing room and once the five pros get on the track.
Scotsman David Coulthard and Finnish two-time world champion Mika Hakkinen both fly in to see if they can whip up on Alonso, Jenson Button (himself a world champion), and newcome Stoffel Vandoorne. It’s a great collection of rib-poking driver jokes and five drivers who should know better pulling what more or less amounts to Harlem Globetrotter-style antics like jumping the curbing and taking grass shortcuts. Watch it and enjoy it, because it’s not every day five of the best road racers in the world gather to talk smack and maybe race a bit.
