Racing is an incredible thing for many reasons but the financial side of it is just staggering, especially on the top echelon of professional competition. Stuff that is the hot ticket one minute is old junk the next. Millions in engineering and development are turned into so much scrap at the mere prospect of something newer and better coming down the road. Take these heads for example. These are TRD (Toyota Racing Development) Phase 9 heads and there are nine sets of them (bare) for sale in this lot on RacingJunk.com and the whole thing is listed for $2,000. When they were new these were pretty hot stuff and they represented Toyota’s foray into NASCAR debuting with the truck series and refining their stuff before going full bore into the big stock car series that requires investment of 10s of millions to even be halfway competitive.
Once these heads kind of aged out of NASCAR they and the majority of the Phase 9 engines were used in drifting, in off road truck racing, sprint car racing, ARCA, and the heads were used for the development of a bad ass four banger midget engine as well. It is the typical racing “trickle down” story, right? Welp, we’re guessing that the trickle has all but dried up because looking at these pristine bare heads that are for sale, there’s got to be some reason why this seller is giving them away and the reason is that likely no one wants them anymore.
We do not know what these will bolt to and if they will fit anything BUT a Phase 9 block but the heads are works of art. The large spread ports, the beautiful combustion chamber design, and other element seem to indicate that these could be killer on a competition eliminator motor or something of that sort. Maybe we are wrong?
In the early 2000s Toyota built about 500 Phase 9 engines. Incredible to see so many sets of heard for sale so cheap!
I wonder what the remaining Phase 9 parts go for? Put this in a first generation Celica and you’d have an interesting mini muscle car.
id put it in something that had an ls stock, just to piss off the fan boys
Thanks for linking my ad. They actually poured just over 3000 Phase 9 / 10 blocks. There supply of parts is actually quite plentiful if you know where to look. I currently have a large inventory of complete Phase 9 / 10 and Phase 11 / 14 engines and parts. The reason for selling them cheap is not that there is anything wrong with them but having 19 sets is excessive and a waste just sitting on a pallet.
Thanks again,
Danny
Why didn’t they build a street car to put a detuned motor in?
yeah, would love to see a toyota nascar motor in a 70 chevelle or a 69 mustang!
